Merrick sheriff’s department tracks down dangerous driver
CENTRAL CITY, Neb. (KSNB) - A man who authorities say drove in the wrong lane of two different highways may now face as many as six felony charges in Merrick County.
A press release on the Merrick County Sheriff’s Facebook page indicates that Najib Yusuf, 30, of Dawson County was arrested Wednesday for assaulting an officer, flight to avoid arrest, resisting arrest, obstruction, reckless driving and criminal mischief.
The release said Yusuf was reported driving east in the west-bound lane of Highway 30 west of Central City Wednesday morning. He forced numerous vehicles off the road including a state patrol investigator driving an unmarked car. The investigator pursued Yusuf into Central City where the Central City police and Merrick County sheriff joined the chase. Yusuf turned north on Highway 14 and continued for about 10 miles north of Central City, still driving in the wrong lane. The Sheriff’s office said he eventually stopped after he tried to drive into a tree line where his vehicle struck a fallen tree. A state trooper fired what has been called a “less-lethal” chemical weapon to force Yusuf from his car. During the chase speeds reached 100 miles an hour.
As of Friday afternoon there were no charges against Yusuf recorded on the state-wide court records database.
