GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A 23-year-old is facing multiple charges following an accident that left a vehicle smashed up against a tree.

Grand Island Police responded to an injury accident around 7 p.m. Sunday in the 900 block of West 6th Street.

Police said the driver of one of the vehicles had ran from the scene prior to officers arriving. He was located and provided a false name to police. They were able to identify him as Jose Garcia Gutierrez.

Record check showed he had an active Hall County warrant and also did not have a valid driver’s license.

During the accident investigation, open alcoholic containers were found in the vehicle.

Witnesses told police that Garcia Gutierrez was driving fast in a residential neighborhood where a large amount of people were located outside.

Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were performed and police said he showed gross impairment and was unfit to drive.

After failing a breath sample, he was arrested for leaving the scene of injury accident, no operator’s license, DUI 1st, false reporting, willful reckless, open container and a Hall County warrant.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
