Fall lawn care season arrives with a long to-do list
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - As we enter the Fall season, there are tips homeowners may want to consider to keep lawns looking healthy and green.
Total Turf Care in Hastings fortunately has several ideas. They say most people try their best to maintain their lawn on their own, but they say services like they provide are also a good investment given the time demand. However, if you do go it alone, they say watering your lawn is at the top of the priorities this time of year.
“It’s important to continue to water your lawn,” said Brad Novich of Total Turf Care. “This is a great time of the year to control weeds, and its always good to fertilize.”
The average cost for a professional lawn care treatment ranges between $50-$60 on average, but making the financial commitment also helps in making sure you don’t make late season mistakes.
“Some of the biggest mistakes I see are people mowing too short, and just because its nicer doesn’t mean you have to stop watering,” Novich said. “Moisture is a big thing and when mowing, we like about 3 1/2 inches.”
Most lawn treatment companies will treat lawns until around Thanksgiving or when the first freeze settles in. They also say during their treatments so far this season, they’re seeing a higher presence of army worm.
“This year is one of the worst we’ve had with fall army worms,” Novich said. “They can destroy your lawn in the matter of a couple of days.”
Novich says most people can spot army worms in their own yard, as they create little brown areas throughout the yard.
As for those with underground sprinkler systems, Novich says to leave it on for at least another month.
“If you have an underground sprinkler system until it freeze, I would continue to water because that moisture is going to stay in the ground and be beneficial next year.”
