HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - One Hastings elementary school is teaching students more than how to read and write grammatical correct sentences.

Educators at Alcott Elementary is teaching its students life tools like how to be kinder by applying the golden rule.

Teachers and staff said the new lesson, called, social emotional learning is important to students’ growth because it will help them better adapt to daily challenges.

“They do 15-minutes of learning together where we have slides and they do a learning circle where they talk about just how they are feeling and maybe we show a video that can help them focus on something like kindness or resilience. Something to just bring them into a good head space for the day,” said Amber Schultz, the school’s Social Emotional Learning Coach.

Teachers say students are responding to the new lesson extremely well.
