GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Police have identified the man who died in Thursday’s fatal crash at Highway 30 and Webb Road.

GIPD said Deryne Eastman, 52, of Giltner, was killed after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck, driven by Jolene Pfeifer, 46, of Grand Island.

The crash happened around 7:49 a.m.

Police said in an initial statement that the speed of the motorcycle was a major contributing factor in the deadly crash, but that has now been determined to not be the case.

Captain Jim Duering said police had retrieved information from the motorcycle speedometer revealing the speed to be pretty high. But he said after further investigation and review of local video, it was determined that Eastman’s back tire came off the ground and gave a false reading.

Investigators are working to measure the frame of the video to do a closer speed calculation.

GIPD now says speed was not a major contributing factor in the crash.

A reconstruction and investigation is on-going with the assistance of the Hall County Sheriff’s Department and Nebraska State Patrol. However, at this time it is believed the pickup was eastbound on Highway 30 turning left to go north onto Webb Road when the motorcycle collided with the front fender of the pickup.

At this point in time, police said they are not far enough into the investigation on if there will be any criminal charges against the truck driver.

The accident is still under investigation, as police said they will seek to find all contributing circumstances and factors.

GIPD said Highway 30 and Webb north and southbound was closed for several hours as crews worked the scene.
