WOOD RIVER, Neb. (KSNB) - The Wood River Rural School hosted a Veterans Day program Thursday morning, where a veteran shared the meaning of the day.

Members of the Future Farmers of America student organization invited local veterans to the event.

While there, the student body, veterans and their families heard a poem read by a FFA member, listened to songs for each of the military branches and took in speeches from several speakers.

Dennis Wagoner served in the U.S. Army and explains why Veterans Day is important to him.

“It’s a day to remember the people who lost their lives serving our country and the wounded that we need to do more to take care of. The Veterans system has kind of dropped the ball as far as helping the wounded veterans,” said Wagoner.

He added that events like the one held is especially nice when children are involved so they can realize what veterans have done to keep their freedom.

“Hopefully they will respect this and think about doing the same thing when their time comes,” Wagoner said.

The ceremony ended with the playing of Taps.
