GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The City of Grand Island is getting ready for winter.

Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele and Street Superintendent Shannon Callahan said they have already begun the preparation phase which includes a plan for both ice control and salting roads.

Callahan said, the street’s division is responsible for maintaining the city’s plow crews, salt truck crews and mechanics who will work around the clock until all roadways have been cleared.

Callahan said the first line of defense for slick or snow covered roadways is ice control.

The city has a storage building that can hold approximately 1000 tons of granular ice controlled material.

She said five trucks are used to spread the material on major roads and intersections.

Road salt is used until the temperature drops below 20 degrees; once the temperature is below 20 degrees other materials will be added with the roadway salt.

“The goal of the winter operations for the street division is to return roadways to a safe driving condition as efficiently as possible. In order to achieve this goal our city plow crews, salt truck crews and mechanics work around the clock,” Callahan said.

The plan will go into effect when there is two or more inches of snow on the ground.

Callahan said crews will begin removing snow with the emergency routes first, once those are clear, the city begin clearing the rest of the city in sections.
