HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Pets can become pawns in domestic violence situations. That’s why Encourage Advocacy Center is working with Hastings veterinarians to ensure everyone is safe.

They have provided shelter for animals through foster homes for many years. The agency also began a partnership with Start Over Rover, a no-kill, nonprofit animal rescue and shelter in Hastings, in 2019.

A grant from RedRover Relief paid to finish space at Start Over Rover to shelter pets of Encourage clients. The agency also works with some local hotels to shelter domestic violence survivors and their pets when it’s not possible for them to separate.

Volunteers also continue to foster pets, including some large animals, such as horses. Sometimes, friendships develop between the Encourage client and the fostering volunteer, Springer said, providing an additional support for that person.
