Coalition asking for holiday gift donations for local veterans
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Business Coalition for Veterans is asking the community to come forward and help out veterans in need this Christmas. Their fifth annual Veteran Christmas Gift Drive to collect presents for local vets started up Friday.
BCV has red collection bins inside three locations around Grand Island: KRGI radio station as well as both Super Savers.
Coalition founder Chef Anthony Brando said some of those receiving these gifts may not have been able to afford Christmas presents otherwise.
“To know that a veteran, who might be a low-income veteran, and the funds are limited to have gifts for his children and grandchildren, that is just — I’m getting teary-eyed just talking about it,” Brando said. “That’s cool, it really is cool.”
They’re looking to collect gifts for all ages, including gift cards to grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations in the area.
Chef Anthony noted that the drive had been such a success in past years, they’ve seen the bins overflowing with items, leaving them to come back every other days sometimes to make space for more.
Brando said he was hoping for a certain turn out for the drive this year.
“Lots of gifts. Lots of love. Lots of gift cards,” he said. “I mean, to have a gift bag at $225, and 36 of those last year, that was just, that’s mind-blowing — in the middle of COVID, you know. So, I hope we can outdo last year.”
BCV planned to collect items for the drive through December 10.
