Updates to the 511 weather alert system

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Nebraska Department of Transportation held a press conference on Monday morning unveiling their improvements to their 511 service.

The 511 service is travel system that helps inform of road conditions, alerts that can end up saving people’s lives they take heed of the the warnings.

In addition NDOT, the Nebraska State Patrol, and the National Weather service were on hand to help show off the upgrades to service.

The updates include an app to keep track of road conditions in real time and the ability to track snow plows.

“Its (511) been about 20 years. It started out strictly as a phone service you would dial 511 to be able to figure out what the conditions on the road are, it evolved to a desktop app,” Jeni Campana with NDOT said. “Now we have an app you can download on both your Android device or on your iPhone.”
