HASTINGS, Neb. (PRESS RELEASE) - Two dozen displaced residents will have a warm place to stay thanks to a coordinated effort after a fire broke out at the Village Terrace Senior Apartments on Friday.

Hastings Fire and Rescue was called to the fire at 315 S. 1st Ave. at 7:27 p.m. Firefighters located smoke and flames at the main entryway and 23 residents were evacuated. Thirteen firefighters were on scene for HFR, with four mutual aid firefighters from Hastings Rural. The fire was declared extinguished at 8:22 p.m.

Preliminary reports from HFR’s fire marshal indicate the fire started due to an electrical malfunction in a heating unit in the entryway’s ceiling. The building sustained structural damage to the trusses and attic, as well as water damage to the entryway and the hallways in both directions.

The Salvation Army coordinated rooms at a nearby hotel for displaced residents who were unable to make other arrangements, and Hastings Public Schools volunteered the use of a bus to help transport residents. Firefighters also spoke with residents and went apartment to apartment collecting necessary items like medications to ensure all residents had what they need for the duration of their displacement.

The Hastings Police Department, Adams County Emergency Management, and the Hastings Utilities Department all assisted on scene.

One minor injury unrelated to the fire was reported, which was treated on scene.

We’re grateful for our selfless community organizations who came together to get this tough work done quickly!
