HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - With the snowy weather coming into the Tri-City area, the Nebraska Department of Transportation is doing what they can to help keep people’s commutes safe by plowing the roads and highways.

Even though the snowfall didn’t meet expectations of weather forecasters. The snow that did fall needed to be cleared from the roads.

Trucks equipped with plows and various salts and chemicals to help melt any stubborn snow.

Daryl Lutes drives one of those trucks and he explained using the salt and chemicals is not always a good idea.

Sunday’s snow was light and dry with made it easy to clear but if he had used the melting agents it could have caused ice to form.

Lutes said it all comes with experience of how to handle different types of snow.

“Well you know any experience you have if you put it in your memory bank it will help you down the road and that’s the one thing you would have trouble replacing on any job is experience,” Lutes said.

NDOT provides a website for people to track snow plows so you know where they are when you get ready to leave, so you can keep yourself and the snow plows safe.
