HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - With the apartment fire tragedy in New York, Local4 News talked with Adams County Emergency Manager Ron Pughes about how to stay safe from fires in your apartment.

Pughes gave some advice on how to prevent fires before they become a problem.

  • Check your fire alarms regularly.
  • Have an escape plan in place and practice those.
  • In the event of a fire, know what you are going to do. Escape or shelter in place?

Pughes said people who live in apartment buildings should always be alert to danger.

“If for some reason you hear a smoke detector don’t assume that its just the person down the hall that burned their toast again,” Pughes said. “Treat every alarm as a fire.”

Pughes also said if people get out of a fire safely, the last thing they should do is run back in to get any possessions or pets.
