KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) -Sunday’s Discover Ice Fishing Kearney brought out experienced ice fishers as well as those who are just getting introduced to the sport.

Participants did not go fully onto the ice as is traditionally done, so they fished from the safety of a dock.

Everyone was encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment, but there was some loaner equipment if people needed it.

For beginners bait and instruction was provided. Larry Pape helped organize the event, and he says ice fishing has a special place in his heart.

“My dad and brother and I and some of the neighbors would take an old homemade tent made out of a parachute and some old metal bars,” Pape said. “It was kind of a group effort and a lot of fun at night and so I grew up doing that. That camaraderie with my dad and brother was very important.”

The Commission is planning on holding another one of these ice fishing events in Lincoln at the end of the month.
