HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The South Heartland District Health Department reported that more than 97% of people who are hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated.

South Heartland’s executive director Michele Bever told Local4 News vaccines are the way out of this pandemic.

“The fact that the vaccine is keeping people from getting more severely ill is the important piece,” Bever said. “That’s why we are encouraging people so their health is not impacted as severely, so that the system is not dealing with so many cases.”

According to the weekly report as of December 2021, people who are fully vaccinated were 11-times less likely to be hospitalized, and when it comes to boosters people become 46-times less likely to be hospitalized.

Bever said if people continue to not get the vaccine the health care system will suffer.
