KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire early Sunday morning.

Just before 1 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a residence in the 4400 block of Ave. E.

Upon arrival, crews were met with flames showing on the exterior of the house near the front door. The fire was quickly brought under control while a search for potential victims was conducted.

The house suffered significant smoke and fire damage to both the interior and exterior of the structure.

The residents were not home at the time. One cat was found deceased, unfortunately.

KVFD responded with nearly 20 firefighters and three apparatus and were assisted on scene by Kearney Police Department , Good Sam EMS, State Fire Marshal Investigator, NPPD and Northwestern Energy.

Preliminary investigation indicates the fire is believed to have been electrical in nature. The official cause is still under investigation.

KVFD said this is another reminder to check and service your smoke detectors (replace every 10 years), sleep with your bedroom doors closed and always have an evacuation plan in place for your family.
