GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Senior High gave eighth graders something to look forward on Sunday.

Students from Barr, Walnut, and Westridge middles schools came to the GISH campus for the Eighth Grade Extravaganza. They visited with teachers from the different academies they offer.

Prospective athletes could visit with coaches and current members of the various sports teams. First they met with teachers responsible for the freshmen seminars all students take during their first year at the senior high.

GISH principal Jeff Gilbertson told Local4 News the day also helps get parents involved.

“This is our chance to involve our parents and our stakeholders in what we are trying to accomplish, again its a deeper dive into what we are all about,” Gilbertson said.

Even beyond high school GISH is setting their kids up for the college level.

“Here at Senior High we offer those dual credit classes,” said GISH teacher Amy Almquist. “So a lot of kids will start on their coursework before they finish with their diploma at Grand Island Senior High.”

GISH officials estimate 250 families took advantage of the event.
