5-Star Performer: Garrett joins elite hat trick club for Kearney boys soccer
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - One decision can change everything.
For Kearney boys soccer, that decision was shifting Ryland Garrett from midfield to forward for his senior season — his fourth year on varsity.
“I was excited about that,” Garrett told Local4 Sports. “Just to have more chances at goal, last year at the midfield I didn’t get as many as I thought I would, so he moved me up and it’s been working great.”
Garrett scored eight goals last season on a team that finished 9-7, a mark the Bearcats felt was underachieving relative to their potential. This year, Garrett is already up to 14 goals before the end of the regular season.
“He’s just continued to elevate his level of play night in and night out and as our season has started to continue on, we pick up more wins, you can see Ryland is kind of growing in confidence offensively as well,” Kearney boys soccer coach Scott Steinbrook said.
This past Saturday against Omaha Central, Garrett scored again. And again. And again.
It was the second time this season Garrett recorded a hat trick — three goals in a single game — which puts him among an exclusive group.
“If I look down at the record books and see the names of the guys that have scored multiple hat tricks in a season, it’s a small list,” Steinbrook said. “For Ryland to add his name to that list, not only once, but twice this year with hat tricks, is pretty cool for him.”
