Local athletes shine at Dave Gee Invitational
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - For back-to-back days, we’ve been able to say that the weather hasn’t been terrible at least, and high school track athletes from all over central Nebraska took advantage at the Dave Gee Invitational hosted by Northwest Thursday.
The school also inducted its latest athletic Hall of Fame class, which included Brandon Harrington who just so happens to be the husband of our very own Alissa Harrington, so congratulations to him and the other inductees!
Let’s get to the action, as Aurora big man and Wyoming commit Gage Griffith won the boys shot put quite easily with a heave of 57′6″. The next closest guy to him didn’t even clear 50 feet.
In the girls discus, GICC’s Maddie Schneider won by the narrowest of margins. Her throw of 118′7″ edged out Adams Central’s Claire Hemberger 118′6″ throw in the finals.
As for the girls high jump, Holdrege’s Hanna Swearingen took home the championship, clearing the bar at 5′1″. Finally, in the Girls 4x800 Meter Relay, Northwest has a pretty sizeable lead at the midpoint hand-off, but Broken Bow’s final two legs of the race made the difference. Anchor runner Gaby Staples blew past the Northwest anchor runner to win the race by just two seconds. Broken Bow’s winning time was 10:15.
