Thompson named new Freshman Academy Principal at GISH
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Public Schools has named Blake Thompson as the new principal of the Academy of Freshman Exploration at Grand Island Senior High.
Thompson has been a strong leader and proponent of student success throughout his career. Previously, Thompson served as the Assistant Principal and Activities Director for Harvard Public Schools for 11 years. He carries credentials from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with both a B.A. and M.A. in Music Education along with a 7 - 12 Principalship Endorsement from UNK as well.
Looking forward to joining GISH, Thompson shared, “I’m excited to be a part of the Academies of Grand Island Senior High! The integration of education towards college and careers is something I believe in and I’m really thrilled to be a part of working with students at this important time of their lives. I’m looking forward to helping our GISH students feel confident about making the decisions that will help guide and shape their future.”
With Dr. Mintken, current Freshman Academy Principal, set to lead West Lawn Elementary as their new Principal at the end of this school year — Thompson will be ready to join GISH this summer.
“We are excited to welcome Mr. Blake Thompson as the Principal leading the Academy of Freshman Exploration,” Jeff Gilbertson, Executive Principal at Grand Island Senior High, mentioned, “Mr. Thompson has the proven skills and experiences as a teacher and administrator that will match our equally talented teachers and staff. Mr. Thompson’s student-centered focus will be based on building trusting relationships with staff, students, and parents so that continued collaboration, growth, and improved student learning happens.”
Dr. Tawana Grover, Superintendent of GIPS, echoes those sentiments:
“The Academy of Freshman Exploration is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore all the Academies have to offer. As a signature experience, it provides the opportunity to design highly individualized plans for each student, to help meet their needs, explore their interests, and pursue their passion. We are excited for Mr. Thompson to bring his leadership and creativity to this space. No doubt he will continue our efforts of empowering our students as we welcome even more freshmen to Grand Island Senior High. We offer over 72 dual credit and AP courses where every student can find a path to a future that is certainly prescribed to set them up to succeed. Mr. Thompson’s experience and leadership will be a great fit within the program.”
As Thompson looks to move into the role early this summer, GIPS will be scheduling meet and greet opportunities for GISH staff and families to connect with him before the next school year.
“We are excited to see what the future holds for him and the Academy of Freshman Exploration.”
