Hastings man injured after being struck by vehicle

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - A Hastings man was seriously injured in an accident Tuesday afternoon near the high school.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of 14th Street and Saunders Avenue.

Hastings Police Sgt. Jason Haase said 68-year-old Tom Hartwig was northbound on the sidewalk on Saunders Avenue with his bicycle, when he entered the crosswalk to cross 14th St.

At the same time, a 17-year-old female student from Hastings High turned left onto 14th, colliding with Hartwig.

Sgt. Haase said he struck the windshield of her vehicle. He went on to say how the driver immediately stopped and Hartwig fell to the ground.

Hastings Fire & Rescue were called out, where they transported Hartwig to Mary Lanning Healthcare.

Sgt. Haase said at this time, they believe his injuries to be serious but non-life threatening.

He did add that his most recent information was that he was awake, alert and speaking at the hospital but also that he will likely be transferred to a different hospital to get further treatment.

The teen driver was not injured, but was shaken up.
