HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Today will feature more heat as southwest winds crank up at 15 to 25 mph and some gusts over 30 mph. This will push high temperatures up into the 90s for most areas. A strong cold front will move in from the north northwest, moving into Northern Nebraska in the afternoon. Despite the strong front, thunderstorms will struggle to fire up. First off, dew points won’t climb much with the southwest winds. So low level moisture will be lacking. The upper level energy with this storm system will also be stronger to the northeast. Because of this, I only expected a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms as this cold front passes southeastward through the evening hours. Eastern Nebraska will have a slightly better chance. The chance gets better east of the Missouri River. Behind the cold front, winds will be rather breezy out of the north northwest, which will draw in much cooler air. Lows Friday morning will range from the low/mid 40s west to the mid/upper 50s east.

Friday will be a partly to mostly cloudy day for much of the area with continued breezy north northwest winds. High temperatures will range from the mid 50s west to the lower 70s southeast. Later Friday night into Saturday morning, some light rain showers could move into the area. The chance will be greater over Southern Nebraska and Northern Kansas. Meanwhile, the mostly cloudy skies will keep things quite cool on Saturday. High temperatures will mostly only be in the mid 50s which will be nearly 20 degrees below average.

Sunday will be a bit nicer with highs back into the mid to upper 60s under partly cloudy skies and breezy winds. Our best chance of rain will be some light showers that return to the area Monday. High temperatures on Monday will only be in the mid to upper 50s and lower 60s. Tuesday will be a bit warmer with highs back into the upper 60s and lower 70s. There is a slight chance of rain. Temperatures will trend back to warmer and above average for the second half of next week.
