HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Demolition of Bert’s Pharmacy in downtown Hastings began on Friday morning, part of what’s expected to be a three week clean up process that will leave behind just a dirt lot where it once stood.

According to Bert’s Pharmacy owner Tom Choquette, they are waiting on the insurance company to settle before making any final decisions on whether to rebuild in that spot.

However, Choquette did say it was “probably unlikely” that they will rebuild Bert’s in that location.

The downtown location was destroyed back on March 13 from a fire that started due to wiring in the neon sign.

Tammy Valentin with Gary Michael’s Clothier, which is located across the street from Bert’s, said this is a terrible loss for downtown.

“They’ve been great neighbors and it was a piece of nostalgia,” said Valentin. “The inside too was beautiful and it was like walking back 50 years or 75 years into history.”

Choquette is grateful to those who have shown their support. He encourages people to use the other Bert’s Pharmacy location in Hastings, located at W. 14th St. and Burlington Ave.
