HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - We’re in for a 6 or 7 day stretch of below average temperatures after a strong cold front plowed through the area yesterday evening. Clouds are fairly thick this morning and will hold tough for our northern and western communities. Farther south and east, I expect clouds to clear up and help warm things up a bit more. Look for high temperatures to range from the mid 50s northwest to the lower 70s southeast. Winds will continue to be rather breezy out of the northwest at 12 to 22 mph with gusts to 30 mph.

Overnight, clouds will fill in for areas that end the day with sunshine. The chance for showers will start to increase, mostly across Northern Kansas and Southern Nebraska. The chance of rain will be better the farther west you go. Some snowflakes could mix in for our western counties, but accumulation is unlikely. We’ll see lows from the mid 30s west to the mid 40s east. With clouds back around for the entire area on Saturday, temperatures will remain quite cool across the area with highs mostly in the 50s. The chance of rain will continue across mainly Southern Nebraska and Northern Kansas with the best chance in the morning.

High pressure will build in from the northwest Saturday night, which will allow for clearing skies and lightening winds. This will lead to the coldest night of the forecast. By Sunday morning, lows could drop down to between the lower 30s northwest to the upper 30s to around 40° southeast. That areas that drop down to around 36° or colder to the north and west of the Tri-Cities may see the potential for some frost. Keep this in mind in case you need to bring in potted plants or cover up other plants that you have outdoors. Sunday will turn in to a fairly nice day after the chill morning. Skies will be mostly sunny with some late day clouds moving in from the west. Highs will mostly be in the mid to upper 60s. Winds won’t be terribly strong.

Our next rain chance moves into the area on Monday and will be the best chance of our forecast. This should be a fairly widespread, slow, and steady rain that drops a quarter to half inch of rain for much of the area. Because of the rain and clouds, this will likely be the coolest day ahead with highs in the low to mid 50s for most. I would be surprised if some don’t get out of the 40s.

There may sill be some lingering showers Tuesday and Wednesday for parts of the area, but the chances are lower during that time. With clouds still fairly thick, but a lower chance of rain, temperatures should be a little warmer. Highs on Wednesday will mostly be in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Look for more low to mid 60s on Wednesday. Sunshine returns Thursday and temperatures warm up a bit more on Thursday as highs get back to the 70s. Even warmer temperatures are anticipated for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
