Spencer vs. the Pros - Hole #5 - Par 4, 15th Hole at Centura Hills
CAIRO, Neb. (KSNB) - The latest edition of Spencer vs. the Pros took me to the small town of Cairo for one of the best hidden gem golf courses in the area - Centura Hills.
I squared off with the course owner Garrett Rathke on the Par-4, 15th Hole. The hole featured a large tree looming along the right side of the hole with a fairway bunker that could be trouble on the left side.
Rathke hit first and squared up on a great tee shot long down the right side. It was so long that he actually carried the tree and ended up just about 50-feet off the green. I certainly couldn’t hit it that far, but I regrettably took the same line toward the tree. Fortunately, I was able to land just before the tree and roll far enough past it to have no issue on the second shot.
My second shot ended up being close to what I wanted it to do as I landed it on the green and rolled it just off the back to the fringe leaving myself a long birdie putt. Rathke got much closer with his second shot, chipping to about 15 feet.
My birdie putt from the back fringe had a good lag to it, but came up off the mark leading to a tap-in par, which opened the doors for the pros to birdie and take the lead. However, Rathke’s birdie putt was also just off, leading a par for the pros.
”I think making four on this hole even though it was down-wind - sometimes down-wind makes it harder actually, so taking a par on this hole is always a good thing,” Rathke said.
