Spencer vs. the Pros - Hole #6 - Par-4, Hole 6 at Elks Country Club
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - In by far my best start ever to the summer-long Spencer vs. the Pros golf series, I entered hole #6 of the series at -1 and all tied up with the pros as I made my return to Elks Country Club in Hastings.
I again met up with Elks Board Trustee Don Runcie as we took aim at the Par-4, 6th Hole of the Elks. Runcie said they call it the runway hole because of the straight-away nature of the hole.
After we both tied on the Par-3, 5th Hole of the course earlier in the series, Runcie still had honors off the box. His tee shot sailed a bit low and left, but was well down the fairway. As for my tee shot, I found a way to make the hole hard by sending my tee shot a bit further right than I wanted. I didn’t get into any tree trouble, but I did stick myself into the right rough.
Runcie’s second shot came up short of the green after he clipped a bush on his way toward the green, but I couldn’t capitalize too much. My second shot from the rough also came up short as I didn’t take enough club.
With both of us left needing to go up-and-in to save par, Runcie made a good run at it by rolling his chip shot about 10-feet past the hole, leaving him a downhill putt to save par. I on the other hand stayed below the hole with my approach, also leaving myself about a 10-foot putt to save par.
Runcie went first and slid his putt slightly right of the hole leading to a tap-in bogey. Meanwhile, I was able to find a pretty straight-forward part of the green and was able to sink my par putt, which had little movement on it.
The victory also gives me my first-ever lead in my Spencer vs. the Pros series, which is a miracle in itself! At the end of the hole, I asked Runcie if he thought we played.
”I think we did well,” Runcie said. “I usually get bogey on this hole, so I’m happy with a bogey.”
