GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - On a day that felt hot enough to boil hot dogs, the Coney Island Lunch Room held a hotdog eating contest for a good cause.

Nearly 20 people came out to wolf down hot dogs in good fun Saturday morning to benefit the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Grand Island.

The lunch room brought the contest back for its eighth year — each time around, the proceeds go to benefit a different charity.

Owner George Katrouzos said he was honored to host the event.

“It’s wonderful what they do, it’s a tradition we do it every year. People love doing it, people are pretty generous in this community,” Katrouzos said.

The generosity did not go unnoticed by the beneficiary of the event.

“The thing I have learned about Grand Island, more than anywhere I have ever lived, is how giving the community is, how much people want to be involved,” said Brenna Poindexter with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Grand Island. “Every year they give to a different organization, it also means exposure for that organization to be able to talk to people and share their work. It’s just such a powerful event to have people learn about you.”

Poindexter told Local4 News that the money raised on will go directly into programs Big Brothers, Big Sisters provides.
