KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Amazingly enough, through six holes of the summer-long Spencer vs. the Pros series, I have found a way to still be at -1 and a shot better than the pros. However, I entered Sunday still having to make it through 12 more holes to pull off an upset for the ages.

This week, that brought be back to the course that yielded my first and only birdie of the summer to this point - the Kearney Country Club. General Manager Jami Swift welcomed me back as we took aim at the Par-3, 2nd Hole.

Last time I was in Kearney, both Jami and I birdied the Par-5, 17th, but since she had the benefit of the ladies tees, I was stuck having to try my luck at the hole first. Fortunately, I was able to swing one of my smoothest 8-irons of the summer and found the green just about 15-20 feet from the hole. Jami, once again feeling the pressure from me, also found the green, but she ended up with a longer uphill putt toward the hole.

Once on the green, Jami was out, so she had to putt first. While she made a good run at the hole, it curled left on her right at the end. That left me with a downhill look for yet another birdie at KCC, but my putt also went begging - forcing me to tap in for a par and another tie.

“If you hit the green, you can two-putt all day,” Swift said after the hole. “It’s hard to make a par on this hole if you don’t hit the green, so really it’s all you gotta do.”

Through seven holes now, I am continuing to hold off the pros by a shot at -1. With the pros at even par, it’s certainly still anyone’s match! On Sunday, June 26 I’ll be paying a visit to Ravenna for the first time this summer as I take aim at Ravenna Golf Club. Tune in at 5 & 10 to see how I do!
