HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Despite more clouds around today, it will be another hot day for the area as a cold front slowly pushes through northern and western portions of the Local4 viewing area. Winds will be breezy out of the south southwest ahead of the cold front at 10 to 20 mph, but those winds will lighten up as the cold front approaches. The cold front should be near the Tri-Cities late this afternoon and early this evening. Look for high temperatures today from the upper 80s northwest to near 100° along the Nebraska/Kansas border. With the cold front continuing to push to the southeast tonight, showers and thunderstorms will pass through the area this evening and overnight. Some severe storms will be possible wind damaging wind gusts the biggest threat. Some large hail will be possible. There may be some lingering thundershowers tomorrow morning...much of which should be cleared out by the afternoon. Look for low temperatures tomorrow morning from the upper 50s northwest to the upper 60s southeast. There will be a break from the heat on Saturday with highs in the upper 70s southeast to the upper 80s out west.

Temperatures will eventually start to come back up through the weekend into next week. Highs on Saturday will mostly be in the 80s for the eastern half of Nebraska, but to the west, some lower 90s will be possible. On Sunday, highs will mostly be up to the upper 80s and low to mid 90s. Much bigger heat returns on Independence Day Monday with highs in the mid to upper 90s and lower 100s. Expect similar highs on Tuesday. Temperatures will come back down a little on Wednesday to the upper 80s and low to mid 90s. Expect similar temperatures next Thursday. Following that, temperatures will start to come back up at the end of next week.

In additions to the mostly above average temperatures over the next week or so, rain and thunderstorm chances will return to the area almost nightly. While there could be some daytime thunderstorms, the evening and overnight will be a more favorable time for thunderstorms. These could mean some much needed rain for the area. But as things often play out with summertime storm chances, some usually get very little while others get too much.
