GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Central Catholic is opening an elementary school, and it already has a wait list out for fall of 2024.

“The opportunity that families have not only for a new school but for a faith-based learning environment has people talking and wanting to know when they can get their names on the list and when they will be able to sign onto the new school so we got that waiting list out as a way to tell people yes we hear you - we’ve had a lot of people reach out and inquire and we just wanna give them a way to make sure that their voice is heard and their support is heard,” said Principal Jordan Engle.

Currently GICC offers sixth through 12th grade but they are hoping to add on space for preschool through fifth.

Right now they’re rallying for support in prayer and finances. The campaign is called “Grounded in Faith - Building our Future” and their goal is $9 million for building improvements and classrooms and another $2 million for scholarship and an endowment fund.

People on the wait list won’t be guaranteed admission, nor is it a binding commitment, but they will have first access to the applications when the time comes.

A prospective parent said that catholic education is crucial for her family.

“First and foremost it’s just very important for my husband and I to send our kids to a catholic school so catholic education is very important to us - when we moved to Grand Island it was a little bit of a disappointment that we wouldn’t have catholic education available to us,” said Kristen Klein.

Klein went on to say that the main difference she sees between public and catholic school is not just the religious component, but the family component.
