DCB legion baseball in pursuit of third straight State title
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - In 2019, the Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus legion baseball team won its first Class C State title in program history. The COVID-19 pandemic struck, throwing a wrench in its 2020 plans, but they surged back in 2021 to win back-to-back championships.
The level of success has been sustained into this season.
“It started a couple years ago with the first State tournament we won in 2019,” DCB coach Joe Noakes said. “We had a young team. I think the boys are hoping for three in a row for this year.”
That sentiment is an understatement.
“Third one would be amazing,” DCB center fielder and Centura’s Kolby Gorecki said. “It would just — that would be a dream come true.”
“It would be very special for all of us I know, just having three,” DCB catcher and Centura’s Bryce Gorecki added. “I think it goes farther into like meaning something for all the towns that are a part of this.”
Despite only having 12 players on the roster for most of the season, DCB has compiled a 25-1 record. Their only loss broke an undefeated streak of 60 games that stemmed back to 2019.
“I don’t think we’re going to lose another game,” Bryce Gorecki said. “That taste was pretty sour in our mouth after that and we didn’t like that.”
“I’m a competitor and I hate to lose, but when we lost that game, the world was lifted off your back,” DCB pitching coach Justin Caspersen added.
DCB is a confident group and they are hoping that carries them into the postseason.
“DCB baseball probably, right now, is at the very top,” Noakes said. “We play central Nebraska, we dominate in central Nebraska and it’s been fun.”
