GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A California man was killed while trying to lend aid following a crash on Interstate 80 near Alda.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said just before 2:45 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to eastbound I-80 near mile marker 310 in reference of a two-vehicle injury accident. Prior to arriving on scene, deputies were notified a secondary accident occurred at this location.

HCSO said a preliminary investigation indicates a Nissan pickup pulling a U-Haul trailer, driven by Salvador Duquemoreno, was traveling eastbound on I-80 when he was struck from behind by an eastbound Peterbilt semi driven by Yelena Coop.

Hector Stanley Duque, 47, of California, who was a passenger in the Nissan truck, then exited his vehicle to lend aide to the driver of the Nissan, where he was struck by a passing vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said Hector Stanley Duque was declared deceased at the scene.

An accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation, which remains open.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol, Grand Island Fire Department, and the Grand Island Rural Fire Department.

The interstate was closed from 3:06 am to 7:11 am during the investigation.
