HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - We ended the month of July on a mostly cooler note, but heat will be back for the beginning of August. There is some isolated shower and weak thunderstorm activity passing through Central Nebraska this morning north of highway 92. These will likely fall apart through the morning. Later today, some more isolated thunderstorms may fire up. Until then, expect mostly sunny skies, although there is some smokey haze across parts of Southern/Western Nebraska and North Central Kansas. High temperatures will rise to between the lower 90s in parts of Central and Eastern Nebraska to near 100° out west. Late this afternoon and this evening, showers and thunderstorms may fire up in areas mainly north of Interstate 80. Severe storms will be possible late this afternoon and early to mid evening. Large hail and damaging wind gusts will be possible. These should weaken and diminish later in the night. Mostly clear skies will return by early Tuesday morning. We’ll see lows from the mid 60s to the mid 70s.

Much of the day on Tuesday will be hot with mostly sunny skies. This may be the hottest day for many with highs from around 96° to 106°. With the humidity, most of Central and Eastern Nebraska and Kansas will see heat index values meet or exceed 105°. Late in the afternoon, a few showers and thunderstorms may fire up. More of these continue into tomorrow night as a weak cool front moves through. Some of these may stick around into Wednesday morning, but should clear out in the afternoon. Look for a slightly cooler day on Wednesday with highs in the upper 80s and low to mid 90s.

Temperatures will again be on the slightly lower, but still slightly above average side of things on Thursday. High temperatures will mostly be in the low to mid 90s. High temperatures on Friday will mostly be in the 90s, but some upper 90s to near 100° are possible in the north and west. Saturday will be another hot day in the 90s to near 100°, but this time, the hottest temperatures may be in the south and east. Some slightly cooler temperatures will moving in from the northwest as a cold front moves in. That cold front could fire some showers and thunderstorms late Saturday afternoon and into Saturday night. Some of the showers and thunderstorms may continue into Sunday. Sunday should be cooler across the area in the upper 80s and lower 90s. It looks like more near average highs will settle in for early next week with highs in the mid to upper 80s and lower 90s.
