‘We like our chances’: Kearney Little League off to Midwest Regional
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The Kearney Little League team won the State championship over Gretna and is the 2022 Nebraska representative in the Midwest Regional.
They had their final practice Tuesday before heading out to Indiana.
“It’s a special situation,” team manager Dane Tobey said. “Anytime you can form a team and then to be able to have that success is pretty rewarding, especially when you’re dealing with 11- and 12-year-olds.”
The team plays their first game Friday against Wisconsin at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
“I’ve never played on ESPN,” second baseman Easton Haas said. “I’m nervous, but pretty excited for it.”
“It’s going to be very fun and I was really wishing we were already there today,” outfielder Cooper Gillespie added.
Last year, Hastings Little League advanced past the Midwest Regional to Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series. It is a semi-motivating factor for Kearney entering the regional.
“I think there’s some of the kids on our team that has a pretty good idea of what Hastings actually accomplished a year ago,” Tobey said.
No matter what, Kearney believes it can compete with any team from anywhere.
“We like our chances,” Gillespie said.
