HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings YMCA marked a big milestone on Thursday morning as they broke ground on their new facility.

COVID hit at the beginning of their fundraising effort but they managed to raise $19 million for the new facility.

Their initial goal was to raise $14 million.

A $5 million grant from Nebraska’s Shovel-Ready Capital Recovery & Investment Act made a big impact, but officials say support came from inside Nebraska borders, and all the way from Kansas City.

“You know it’s exciting,” Hastings YMCA CEO Troy Stickels said. “When you get the first one, I’m not a real emotional person, but I can remember getting the first one and being really emotional. The fact that a bunch of people in Omaha who I don’t know sat in a boardroom and said we’re going to give the Hastings Y $750,000 just blows your mind and that’s a lot of money.”

The efforts of the Y attracted state officials like Kelly Gewecke from the Department of Economic Development. She said this project is partially thanks to the young adults of Hastings.

“I think Hastings has some phenomenal young professionals here that are really helping to grow this young community. I think any community can take that, if you can attract that kind of talent to your community they’re going to make this type of project survive and thrive,” Gewecke said.

Stickels said construction has already started, and there is a possibility of the whole project being done by June of 2024.
