HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Zion Classical Academy in Hastings has a new “classroom” for students this school year.

The garden boxes were finished in May, and that’s when After School Care Coordinator Pearlisa Martinez began planting flowers and vegetables.

She’s taken care of the garden through the summer, getting it ready for students to explore and help tend when they return to school this fall.

”We can always be on the playground, we can always color, we can always play with blocks, but this is a little bit more,” said Martinez. “Sometimes I believe that education does not stop at 3:15. It will give them a space to relax and learn about gardening.”

If you’d like to volunteer and help with the garden, head to the Academy on Thursday nights at 6:30 pm.
