GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - After a 5-5 campaign a season ago, Grand Island Northwest football is aiming to put more games in the win column this year. They will be tested early with games against Aurora and Omaha Skutt back-to-back to start the campaign.

“When we open up going to Aurora and going to Skutt, I think our expectations are probably on Week 1 and 2,” Northwest football coach Kevin Stein said. “With those two big dogs, we’ve got to be on from day one.”

The Vikings felt they were in every game they played last year, win or lose. Much of the defensive depth is returning, but there are some unknowns on the offensive side of the ball.

“Everyone wants to beat Aurora,” Northwest senior quarterback Austin Payne said. “It’s like, as soon as we started summer it was the first day, ‘Let’s be better than Aurora. Let’s be better than Skutt.’ It’s really set the tone for those first couple of weeks.”

Overall, senior kicker Peyton Atwood summarized it best: “Just want to win, kick some butt, go out with a bang with the guys.”

The Vikings will not play either of their home games in September on Viking Field, either. Field renovations are forcing a move to Hastings College on Sept. 9 and Grand Island Senior High Sept. 16. Yet, that is not bothering the program’s players.

“Every game is a game,” Payne said. “At the end of the day, it don’t matter where you’re playing, you want to go and win. So, no, we haven’t really touched base on it, so we’re just going to go out every game like a home game. It don’t matter where you’re at.”
