Kearney man jailed for assault after fight with probation officer
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - A Kearney man is sentenced to jail for domestic assault after a fight with his probation officer.
Court records show Shawn Smith, 35, was convicted on third degree domestic assault and DUI. He was sentenced to 350 days in jail for the assault charge and 60 days in jail for the DUI.
Court records indicated that Smith was in a sexual relationship with his then probation officer, Mara Stamp, 31. Smith reportedly found Stamp in bed with another man in December and got into a fight with her. Smith was originally charged with felony kidnapping and robbery, but those charges were dropped.
Stamp is charged with felony tampering with evidence and misdemeanor false reporting. Court records indicate that she lied to investigators about her relationship with Smith. The case against her is pending. Her attorneys have asked a judge to delay a hearing to allow for negotiations between her and prosecutors.
Stamp is no longer with the Nebraska Probation service. The Probation office provided this statement earlier this year.
“This unfortunate incident involving Ms. Stamp was brought to our immediate attention. The Administrative Office of the Courts and Probation commenced an internal inquiry to ensure all relevant facts where obtained. Ms. Stamp tendered her resignation as we started the internal inquiry. Because this remains an open matter, we are unable to comment on specifics of the case. It is important to note all probation personnel are held to a high standard and education, training, and policies are in place to ensure these standards are met.”
