KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - After years of ice maintenance issues at the Viaero Center in Kearney, the building is revamping its ice system, according to a joint statement from the facility and the Tri-City Storm.

The Storm compete in the United States Hockey League and use the Viaero Center as its home arena. The team has been practicing at the Breslow Ice Facility, home of the Nebraska men’s and women’s ice hockey programs, in Lincoln this season due to continued ice issues in Kearney.

Tri-City’s home-opener against the Omaha Lancers has been postponed twice and is now “to be made up at a date determined in a future,” per the USHL.

There have been several concerts and shows scheduled to take place at the Viaero Center that were previously canceled, including the Disney on Ice performance in March of this year and the Cody Johnson concert a few months later in July.

Here’s the full joint statement:

The Tri-City Storm and the Viaero Center are finalizing the installation of a new ice system at the Viaero Center. Finalizing this install is going to create a great on ice experience for the Tri-City Storm and allow the Viaero Center to provide entertainment throughout the full calendar year. Tri-City Storm’s ownership remains committed to this community and providing the best fans in the USHL with a product they can be proud of. Ongoing upgrades to the Viaero Center is a priority and part of the long term commitment to the City of Kearney and the surrounding communities that support the Storm and the Viaero Center. This upgrade will begin Phase 1 of a large expansion project to make the Viaero Center a state-of-the-art facility for ice hockey and entertainment.

Tickets to the originally scheduled Friday, September 30th or rescheduled Sunday, October 2nd game can be exchanged for any regular season Storm Hockey game during the 2022-23 season. Exchanges are for those that would like to attend any game other than the rescheduled game versus Omaha that will be made up at a later time this season. Tickets to either the September 30th or October 2nd game can be used for the rescheduled game. We look forward to seeing you at the Viaero Center soon.
