In The Kitchen With Joe: ‘Coney Island Lunch Room’
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Since 1933, the ‘Coney Island Lunch Room’ has been serving up coney dogs and more in downtown Grand Island.
Started by George Katrouzos’s grandfather, the business has been passed down through the years, and now it’s George’s turn to run the show.
“It’s fun I guess,” said Katrouzos. “You don’t know what’s gonna happen next but that’s how we all went. We go one generation to another and fall into it. It’s fun to be with the people and learn a lot.”
When patrons enter the restaurant, they’ll see the original menu from 1933, one of the first registers, and more that’ll bring back the nostalgia of yesteryear.
They’ll also be able to order up some delicious coney dogs, and much more.
“[They can order] coney’s and homemade fries and homemade malts and homemade chili,” Katrouzos explained. “Our quarter pound burgers are pretty good too, that’s our main thing. We got our daily specials too but we’ve downsized the last 30 years.”
The support from the community is what’s kept Katrouzos going through the years.
“We got 5th, 6th generations coming in. We’ve got out of towners, first place they gotta come by, they gotta come back to Coney Island,” said Katrouzos. “That’s just the way it is. It’s their tradition. It’s a staple.”
