Hastings College women’s basketball defeat Mount Marty with buzzer beater shot
HASTINGS, Neb. (Press Release) - The Hastings College women’s basketball team needed a late steal and a bank shot at the buzzer to defeat Mount Marty 55-52 Saturday afternoon inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Hastings looked to take control of the game early in the fourth quarter when Katharine Hamburger drained a three with 9:23 to go in the fourth to go up 44-33.
But, the Lancers countered with a 13-0 run before Kiernan Paulk ended the run with two free throws as the game was now tied 46-46 with 5:13 to play.
The teams traded misses for the next minute and a half until Carley Leners connected in a mid-range jumper to go up two with 3:37 to go.
MMU closed to within one on a Eve Miller layup but Allison Bauer connected from downtown to make it 52-48 with 1:26 remaining in regulation.
Mount Marty then got a jumper from Emma Jarovski followed by two free throws by Miller and the game was tied 52-52 with :40 left to play.
The Lady Broncos got the ball to an open Bauer but her three missed the mark and now the Lancers had the ball with a chance to take the final shot.
The Hastings defense created a lot of problems trapping MMU on the sideline where another timeout would get taken with 9.9 seconds left on the clock. Then possibly the play of the game happened when Kiara Berndt didn’t handle the in bound and Leners was there to jump on the ball. While this happened, Jina Douglas was calling for a timeout and was granted it with 6.6 seconds remaining. And because there was no dribble or pass, the ball could be advanced to the front court.
The play that was drawn up in the huddle was immediately disrupted as Mariyah Avila moved the ball to Paulk as she dribbled into a double tea to the left. She then passed the ball back to Avila as she heaved up a shot from 27 feet out that banked its way into the hoop for the game winner as time expired sending the Lady Broncos into jubilation at mid-court.
Oliva Kugler and Allison Bauer each finished with 11 points to lead Hastings while Avila added nine points all of which came from behind the arc. Paulk added seven points while Alyssa Baker,Hamburger and Leners each had five points.
Hastings finished the game shooting 28.6 percent (16-for-56) and 30.3 percent (10-for-33) from behind the arc. Mount Marty shot 38.8 percent (19-for-49) from the field.
MMU won the rebounding battle 40-to-33.
Hastings ends its two game skid and improves to 3-2 (1-1) on the year and will be back in action Tuesday Nov. 22 as College of Saint Mary comes to town with tipoff set for 6:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
