Flooring Company closes after 36 years
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A downtown flooring company is closing its doors for good. Abbey Carpet ‘N’ More will be closing after 36 years of service. The establishment was originally named ‘Carpets ‘N’ More. About 25 years ago they became affiliated with the Abbey Buying Group.
The business became more physical and owners Duane and Dee Johnson did all the work themselves. Which is quite the demand on them, and now they’re ready to enjoy the finer things in life.
“We’re ready to not get up in the morning, do what we like to try to do all day long, be with family more, watch our grandkids grow a little bit faster and better, and just say that we’re going out on a good foot,” said co-owner, Dee Johnson.
They started their in 1986, and when the business first started Duane ran it during business hours. Dee worked the books overnight while taking care of their children during the day. It all started when Duane decided to take his future into his own hands.
“Duane was in floor covering working at other stores before that,” said Dee. “After so many years he thought, ‘I should just do this for myself and my family.’ So that’s when we created Carpets ‘N’ More and then it just kept evolving from that.”
Now after many years of measuring and cutting flooring; they plan to kick their feet up and relax while enjoying their hobbies.
“Duane has his little livestock and his little farm that he’s very busy with, so that’s good,” said Dee. “I love to refurbish furniture. I want to follow grandchildren a little bit more closer than I been able to.”
Dee wants to stay involved in the community, connect with her friends and acquaintances and go wherever the day brigs her.
