KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Thursday marked a big day for the Kearney Area Community Foundation as the organization is hosting its 10th annual ‘Give Where You Live’ 24-hour fundraising event.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have already been raised with the goal of hoping to surpass last year’s total of $1.4 million.

“We’ve just had magnificent support over the years,” said Judi Sickler, President & CEO of the Kearney Area Community Foundation.

She said they are just in awe about how generous people in central Nebraska are in supporting their local nonprofits in their local communities.

There are 181 nonprofits taking part in this year’s day of giving. Of those, 56 have been around since the beginning.

She said they are blessed for those who stuck along in the early years when it was awkward and clunky.

They were able to work it out and now it’s a well-oiled machine.

She says they work hard to make this day happen with the foundation not receiving any money.

Sickler said it all goes to the nonprofits.

This year, $185,000 in challenge match funds and prizes will be awarded to nonprofits participating in Give Where You Live.

“I think (Give Where You Live) has been embraced by local nonprofits for some of them it’s their budget, it makes their budget so they can run the next year so it has become a very important part of our fabric of our community,” she said.

She said there’s a magic about a giving day whether it’s in Kearney or others in central Nebraska.

“There’s just an energy and I think people get fatigued, month after month after month,” she said.

The lobby has been full since 8 a.m. when they opened and she says there is really just something about connection.
