HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The sunshine returns for another day today as temperatures start to warm back up. For many, the reason for the warmer temperatures is strong south southwesterly winds today. Winds won’t be quite so bad out west, but in the east, winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph will be possible. We’ll see high temperatures today from the mid 40s northeast to the mid/upper 50s southwest. Overnight, skies will remain mostly clear during the evening with skies becoming partly cloudy later in the night. South winds will remain rather breezy overnight at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. This will keep temperatures elevated a bit. Lows will drop back to between the mid 20s and the mid 30s.

Friday will be a very interesting and complicated day as a cold front pushes southeast through the area. It’ll start in Northwest Nebraska right away in the morning and be moving out of Southeast Nebraska by the end of the afternoon. The longer you spend in front of the cold front, the warmer your day will be. But once the cold front moves through, temperatures will plunge to the 20s and 30s. High temperatures will range from the the mid 30s northwest to the upper 60s to near 70° in the south. Ahead of the front, there will also be more sunshine. Behind the front there will be a few more clouds with a slight chance of light snow near the South Dakota border. Besides the falling temperatures behind the front, the other big story will be the winds. Ahead of the front, southerly winds will turn more southwesterly and then westerly. They will be fairly breezy at 15 to 25 mph. As the front moves through...especially in the afternoon, winds will turn northwesterly and will crank up. Winds speeds will pick up to 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to around 50 mph. So however your day looks early in the afternoon, it will be much worse by the end of the day.

Winds will remain quite blustery through the evening. Later in the night, winds will start to lighten up and skies will clear up. This will lead to a cold start to Saturday. Low temperatures Saturday morning will be down in the upper 0s and low to mid 10s. Saturday will be a chillier day with partly to mostly sunny skies. High temperatures on Saturday will be in the upper 30s and low to mid 40s. Winds will become breezy by Saturday afternoon out of the southwest at 10 to 20 mph. Saturday will be slightly warmer with mostly sunny skies. Highs will range from the lower 40s north to around 50° southwest.

Temperatures will start to come down Monday into Tuesday with the next shot of colder air moves in. Some long range models still hint at some rain and/or snow, but not all of them do. The timing of the precipitation, if it does happen, is still up in the air. So for now, I’ll mention the possibility of precipitation, but can’t go much further than that for now. There are some hints at even more precipitation later next week.
