Board picks three finalists for GIPS interim superintendent
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Grand Island Board of Education has announced its intention to hire a full-time interim Superintendent for the school district.
After reviewing applications from a number of qualified candidates at the Special Meeting Thursday, January 5, the Board — through the Nebraska Association of School Boards (NASB) — reached out to the individuals they would like to bring in for in-person interviews.
The board has selected three finalists for the Interim Superintendent position.
The candidates are:
- Matthew Fisher
- Dr. Virginia Moon
- Dr. Michael Teahon
All three of the candidates are from Nebraska.
Matthew Fisher, from Grand Island, currently serves as the Director of Public Finance at First National Capital Markets. Prior to that, he served as Superintendent of Northwest Public Schools from 2012-2019. He carries an Education Specialist, Superintendent (EdS) degree from UNK.
Dr. Virginia Moon, from Omaha, served as the Interim Superintendent for Centennial Public Schools from 2020-2021. Her experiences include serving as Interim Superintendent for Kearney Public Schools, Omaha Public Schools, Broken Bow Public Schools and Permanent Superintendent at Ralston Public Schools from 1998-2009. Moon carries a doctorate in Educational Administration from Kansas State University.
Dr. Michael Teahon, from Kearney, currently serves as Department Chair and Associate Professor of the Educational Administration Department at UNK. Prior to his current position, he served as the Superintendent of Gothenburg Public Schools from 2001-2019. Teahon carries a doctorate of Educational Administration from UNL.
The interviews will be hosted at the Kneale Administration Building on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 in a round robin fashion. Each candidate will spend exclusive time with the Board, Executive Cabinet Members, Building Level Administrators, and touring the district.
Shari Becker from NASB will continue to serve as a professional consultant helping to facilitate the process for each candidate.
After interviews, the Board will then deliberate and offer the position to a candidate as soon as possible. The chosen candidate’s name will be presented at a public Board meeting with a motion to approve their hiring as the GIPS Interim Superintendent.
The GIPS Board of Education believes all three candidates carry impressive qualifications and are looking forward to spending time with them next week.
