LINCOLN, Neb. (KSNB) - Talk about a day of highs and lows.

The Grand Island girls bowling team started Monday on about the worst note you could have - a convincing 3-0 loss to Norfolk to open the Class A state tournament. One more loss and their time in Lincoln was over before it even began.

However, that’s when the comeback started.

In the loser’s bracket, Grand Island knocked off Omaha Westside 3-1 to earn a date with Papillion-La Vista. The Islanders then disposed of the Monarchs 3-1 before advancing to take on Millard West. The Wildcats had next-to-no scratch, as GI swept them 3-0 leading to a showdown with #2 Bellevue West. Again - Grand Island wouldn’t let up.

They knocked off Bellevue West 3-1 to make an improbable run to the state championship match against top-seed Fremont. The Islanders then proceeded to open up a 2-1 lead on the Tigers, but that’s when the #1-seed started clawing back. Fremont took the fourth game to force a decisive fifth. That’s when Fremont found another level, only leaving two open frames in a 280-248 championship win.
