5-Star Performer: Broken Bow wins Class C state wrestling title

BROKEN BOW, Neb. (KSNB) - After re-joining Class C for the first time since 2020, Broken Bow won the state wrestling championship Saturday at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.

“We’ve talked about it all year,” Broken Bow wrestling coach Ed Schaaf said. “We just want to put ourselves in the position to have the opportunity to wrestle. And they just -- they did it.”

It is the first time the Indians have won the state wrestling title in any class.

“We’ve won three-straight dual titles, but we’ve never been here,” Schaaf said. “We’ve got second, but it feels pretty awesome to come out here and show everybody the wrestling that we do.”

Aside from the team title, Broken Bow also had two individuals claim state championships.

“My brother did it last year,” Class C 182-pound champion Connor Wells said. “I had to keep the tradition going.”

“It feels great,” Class C 220-pound champion Cal Wells added. “Brothers will be happy.”

The wrestling future is bright in Broken Bow.

“Broken Bow wrestling in the future is -- I mean, we’re going to be good,” Schaaf said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but we’re going to give it heck.”
