GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Rodeo Grand Island start with a boom Friday night.

Top bull riders from around the country descended on the Heartland Events Center to showcase their skills in front of a rowdy crowd.

The bulls and the riders were chomping at the bit for the gates to be thrown open, and once they did the riders held on to the thousand plus pound animals. It was world number two bull rider Trey Holston who wowed the crowd with his ride.

“That was a good ride,” Holston said. “I knew I had a good bull, good enough to drive from San Antonio, Texas last night to get up here. I knew he was good and I was excited to get on him. It’s something I think I was born to do, I also a good adrenaline run, I mean you can’t get away from it, it’s right in line with other crazy sports.”

Holston’s ride netted a top score of 82 and a half points.

The Sutton Rodeo Company organizes Rodeo Grand Island, and it’s producer Steve Sutton said The Heartland Events Center, and it’s versatility, helps attract the crowds.

“We’re gonna rodeo no matter what the weather gets, in the seven years we have been here we had COVID one year, that we didn’t come,” Sutton said. “There was three years that the weather was really bad outside they were predicting no travel, we still had a good crowd, and the cowboys show up.”

The rodeo continues on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., and then they have another show at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchases here.
