GICC’s Ghaifan goes DI, signs with Omaha women’s basketball
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Central Catholic multi-sport star Lucy Ghaifan signed a National Letter of Intent with Nebraska-Omaha women’s basketball Thursday during a ceremony at the school.
“I haven’t reached my peak,” Ghaifan said. “I still have a lot that I can improve on and they’re just really looking forward to having me there. I love the environment and they seem very family. And they just really comfort you and they just have great energy.”
Ghaifan has only been playing basketball since eighth grade and said she committed to the Mavericks around November.
“Me coming in here my freshman year, I would not have think I would’ve been going DI, but I just have improved a lot and I’m really thankful for that,” Ghaifan said. “Everyone is like, ‘This is a big deal. This is a big deal.’ And I’m over here like -- it’s just different. It’s a good experience that a lot of people don’t have.”
Ghaifan said she chose UNO over other offers from Hastings College and Concordia. She credits her GICC program for developing her into a college basketball player.
“They saw the potential in me so they just kept on getting me to go out for club basketball,” Ghaifan said. “Throughout the years a whole bunch of parents and coaches, teammates kept pushing me to become who I am today.”
