Centura girls basketball wins Class D1 state title, first in program history
LINCOLN, Neb. (KSNB) - The NSAA state girls basketball Class D1 championship game took place at Pinnacle Bank Arena Saturday. No. 2 Centura took on No. 4 St. Cecilia.
The Centurions made their first appearance in a state title game since 2001, while the Hawkettes were making their fifth straight appearance in a state championship regardless of class. St. Cecilia won Class C2 a season ago.
History was made, as the Centurions knocked off the Hawkettes 44-38 to claim their first state championship in program history.
“It just kind of is a captstone of what the program already was and we want to keep continuing to grow in that fashion,” Centura coach Laethion Brown said. “We don’t want this to be a one and done and we go back to sub-average again.”
Sydney Davis poured in a game-high 20 points for the Centurions, while also notching a double-double with 11 rebounds.
“We created a legacy for ourselves and the program,” Davis said. “We’ve always had the ‘we can always overcome’ mentality, so we knew that we could come back.”
“It hasn’t hit me quite yet, but as a little girl I watched numerous state basketball tournaments and just to finally have that feeling with my best friends on the court, it’s unreal,” added Kyra Wooden, who scored 12 points in the win.
